Most of this One-Name Study is performed by myself, but a number of people have made contributions to various family groups or have assisted wider research and enquiries. I am always grateful to those who have helped. I should also acknowledge the assistance of Bernadette Siebert from New Zealand who has frequently provided Hollier references even though she has no connection with the name herself.
That's me, the coordinator of the One-Name Study and owner of this web-site. I descend from the Kent Holyer & Hollyer families, see here for more information. I'm interested in any and all Hollyer, Holyer and Hollier families.
My co-researcher, who lives in Hawaii. He descends from the Coventry Hollyers and Alexander Hollyer who emigrated to the USA c1850. He has made contact with most Hollyers in North America and found many references on the web. hollyer@hawaii.edu
Anthony Gerada descends from Frederick Philip William Holyer of Tenterden (1895), son of the mysterious Elvira Lizzie Holyer from Kent, who we now know was never named Elvira, but was Eliza, see here. He now lives in Brisbane, Australia and his family also has ancestral links with Malta. ant@boater.org
Margaret, from Ohio, USA is the daughter of the late Alan Campbell. She is continuing her father's research into his ancestral lines of Maxted, Homewood and Holyer. The Holyer connection is Elizabeth Holyer, born 16 Jul 1784 at Woodchurch, the 8th child of Abraham Holyer and Susannah Crittenden. They in turn descend, as do all Kent Holyers, from John Holyer and Elizabeth Gregory. The Maxted/Homewood family left for the USA in the 1830s. mcampbell_715@yahoo.com
Mike, who lives in Lafayette, Louisiana, has spent many years studying the Hollier family in Louisiana and is best placed to answer queries on this family. FMHollier@aol.com
Anthony Hollyer lives near Cambridge and like me stems from the Kent Holyer/Hollyers which go back to John Holyer and Elizabeth Gregory who married in 1737 in Canterbury Cathedral and started the Woodchurch Holyer dynasty. However, there is one missing link from his line, that of a Lily Kathleen Hollyer born in 1896 in Cranbrook, Kent, daughter of Moses Morris and Mary Jane Holyer only to disappear around 1920. Tony says that he often travels back to the area, to visit relatives and quite regularly visits Woodchurch and the surroundings. Tony has been extremely helpful to the Study by writing to all the present day Holyers and Hollyers in Kent and Sussex, which has generated lots of new contacts and data. ahollyer@genie.co.uk
Michael Ball from Somersby, NSW, Australia is one of several researchers delving into the Sydenham Holliers from Oxfordshire, whose earliest known member is Richard Hollier born c1766, his wife's 5th Great Grandfather. Mike has researched the line that emigrated to Australia with Thomas Hollier & Mary (née Bunce) and has accumulated a lot of data about the Australian lines.
I would also like to acknowledge the assistance of the following correspondents who have provided input on the Sydenham Holliers:
Kerry Ann is researching the Sharnford Holliers, both the UK and Canadian families. She has helpfully been filling in some of the gaps left by Harry Duckworth and myself. hollierk@us.ibm.com
Judith's interests are in the Kent Holyers, specifically the family of William Gregory Holyer (1773-1845). His daughter Mary married William Woodland in 1816 and these are Judith's Gt Gt Grandparents. Their son John Woodland married Sarah Davis and we have found that the Davis family had other connections with the Holyers, namely the marriage of Richard Holyer, the miller at Brenzett, to Elizabeth Davis, sister to Sarah, in 1835. Sadly, Richard Holyer died quite young in 1842 - his grave can still be seen at Woodchurch - but 11 years later Elizabeth had another son Jabez Holyer and it was he, in 1913, who acted as executor for the will of Jane Woodland, daughter of John and Sarah Woodland. Such was the nature of the close-knit communities in Kent. lawfam@ntlworld.com
Brian is researching his Kent Holyer ancestors, in particular Mary Ann Elizabeth Holyer 1886-1915, her father Edward [Edwin] Walter Holyer 1856-1918 (family at Greenwich) and his father Walter Holyer 1813-1896. brian@sanhome.fsnet.co.uk
Barrie is researching Holliers from Weedon and surrounding areas of Northamptonshire - quite a challenge as this county is almost entirely absent from the IGI and other indexes. The main family being researched is John Hollier who married Sarah Leatherland in 1786 at Nether Heyford. Barrie was born in Britain but emigrated to Tasmania in 1953 where he now teaches Mathematics at the University of Tasmania at Launceston. J.Robinson@tassie.net.au
Carolyn has been researching the Hollier family in Virginia, USA, which dates from the mid 17th century and has probable links back to Westminster in England. Six generations of the family used the forename Simon. car-cos@rocketmail.com
Carol is researching the Deddington Holliers and trying to make sense of this very complicated group. Working together we have managed to link more of the northern Oxfordshire families into this extended tree. humbug.eden@btopenworld.com
Suzanne has done much research on her Isle of Wight Hollier families and written several articles relating to the Holiers on her website. The articles with Hollier content are:
Elizabeth is descended from the line of Joseph and Catherine Hollier at Birmingham in the early 19th century. Joseph might even have been born in Ireland if we can believe the 1841 census! She has been researching this line since 2005.
